The rankings were first announced in February 2010 with publication of the February/March 2010 issue of fDi Magazine. 

Andrew Cooke, chief operating officer of Think London, accepted the top prize for cities on behalf of London, and Lee Amor, executive director of SEEDA, accepted for the Southeast of England, the top-ranked region.

Later, at the London pavilion of the MIPIM conference area, fDi editor Courtney Fingar presented London mayor Boris Johnson with the City of the Future trophy as well.

The other cities and regions awarded certificates included: Small City of the Future, Edinburgh, UK; Large City of the Future, Frankfurt, Germany; overall runner-up for European City of the Future, Paris, France; Small Region of the Future, Capital Region of Denmark; winner for Best FDI Strategy - Large Regions, Flanders, Belgium; and overall runner-up for European Region of the Future, Ile de France.
