The software sector in the Latin America region has seen a 48% increase in FDI between January and June 2011 compared with the same period in 2010, according to greenfield investment monitor fDiMarkets.

A total of 86 investment projects were recorded in the first half of 2011 compared with 58 projects in the first half of 2010. The month of March experienced the highest number of software FDI projects in 2011 in Latin America, with 21 investments.

In the first half of 2011, Brazil received the most software FDI in Latin America, with 33 projects recorded between January and June. Brazil also came out on top in terms of software FDI projects in the first half of 2010, with 21 projects recorded.

US-based IT giant IBM made a number of investments in the Latin America region in 2011, opening two new offices. Likewise Google opened offices in Brazil, Chile and Colombia.
