FDI fell in the final quarter of 2013 in South America, following an uptick in the third quarter of the year. According to greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets, there was a 38% quarter-on-quarter decrease in project numbers in the final three-months of the year, this was after an 8% increase in the third quarter of the year.

Mexico was the biggest recipient of inward investment in South America in the final half of 2013, with 205 projects tracked in the country between July and December 2013. Brazil was the second biggest recipient with 151 projects tracked in the same period.

The number of jobs created through FDI also fell from 21,947 jobs in October 2013 to 10,091 jobs in December 2013. Mexico also emerged as the top recipient for job creation with 56,907 new jobs created between July 2013 and December 2013. The third quarter accounted for 30,528 of these, with 26,379 jobs created in the final quarter of the year. 

In terms of capital investment entering South America, fDi Markets recorded a 41% decrease from July to December 2013. There was a 16% quarter-on-quarter rise in capital investment in the third quarter and a 9% slump in the final three months of the year.
