Colombia has experienced a decline of more than 60% in business services FDI from 2012 to 2014.

A total of 58 FDI projects were recorded, representing a total capital investment of $243.6m. During the period in question, 12,764 jobs were created. Bogotá led the way as the top city for investment throughout the period, winning 48.28% of total projects and $36.2m in capital investment. Barranquilla followed with eight projects and $24.6m, then Medellín with four projects and $12.5m.

Data from greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets shows how project numbers in Colombia have steadily declined since 2012. However, the country saw a staggering increase of 187.04% in capex from 2012 to 2013, before decreasing again by 79.98%. Jobs created started at a healthy 7014 during 2012, but the figure fell by 72.5% by 2913. Job numbers recovered to 3821 in 2014.

Medellín saw the most new jobs during 2012-2014 with 3634 new roles in business services. Spain was the top investor into the country during the period, with fDi Markets tracking 20 projects, followed by the US with 11 and France with eight. Data for the first quarter of 2015 suggest a downward trend in Colombia’s business services sector this year.

Compared with the same point in 2014, FDI fell by 85.71%. Although Colombia recorded no projects during the second quarter during 2014, the country did see an increase in investment with four projects in 2015. The increase did not last for long, as Colombia had no recorded business services FDI during the third quarter of this year.
