Greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets has recorded a year-on-year decline in FDI from the US into Canada. During 2012, US-based companies recorded 159 projects in Canada, a figure which decreased by 19% in 2013. The downward trend continued in 2014, with a decline of 9%, and again in 2015, when a further decrease of 9% was recorded.

The best performing sectors during the four-year period were software and IT services (106 projects) and business services (99 projects), which together accounted for 40% of total investment from the US into Canada. total project numbers in these two sectors decreased between 2012 and 2015, from 74 to 43 (a decrease of 42%).

Job creation as a result of US FDI into Canada also declined during the period. The number of jobs created in 2012 was 12,144. This decreased year-on-year, and by 2015 it had declined by 42%.

Although job creation and project numbers have witnessed a downward trend since 2012, capital investment was seen to recover in 2015. fDi Markets shows a decrease in capital investment of 36% between 2012 and 2014. However, 2015 saw $5bn of investment into Canada from US-based companies, which was an increase of 28%, compared with 2014.
