Data from greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets shows that between January 2012 and December 2014, total investment in the business services sector into Belgium has continued to decline.

The number of business services projects into the country has decreased significantly from 24 in 2012 to 12 in 2014 – the lowest number of recorded projects since 2007. The number of jobs and capital expenditure also dropped between 2012 and 2014. Data shows that 590 new jobs were created in 2012, with a capital expenditure of $227m, which declined in 2013 to 141 new jobs and $125.7m in capital expenditure. This decreased further in 2014 to 129 new jobs and $112.5m in capital expenditure. The number of individual companies investing in Belgium has also declined during this period from 24 in 2012, to 16 in 2013 and 11 during 2014.

Brussels received the highest number of FDI projects in this period, attracting 32 between 2012 and 2014. The city also recorded a decrease in investment during this period, with the number of projects recorded and jobs created dropping by 57.14% and 59.4% respectively.

Data recorded for quarters one and two of 2015 suggests that the overall decline from 2012 looks set to continue. Capital expenditure and job creation during this time, compared with the same period in 2014, show a significant decrease of 68.63% and 71.36%, respectively, with a decline in the number of projects recorded also evident.
