The firm’s plan to sell to Chinese users overseas and set up a virtual mobile network in Europe was marked by the opening of its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) headquarters in London

Increased competition in China’s domestic market and opportunities presented by emerging markets have prompted the firm to internationalise its business.

China Mobile chief representative Henry Ge told the Financial Times that the EMEA group would focus on emerging markets, expatriate Chinese and visitors, including business travellers and Chinese tourists.

China Netcom, the country’s second largest fixed-line telephone company, opened its European headquarters in London last November. Both expansions are part of the Beijing government’s policy to encourage Chinese companies to invest abroad.
