The communications sector has attracted considerable investment in Africa between 2007 and 2012. Greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets has tracked a total of 336 inward communication projects during the period, accounting for 7.5% of all investment in Africa.

The sector has experienced steady growth year on year, with project numbers up from 22 in 2007 to 94 in 2012. South Africa was the largest source country, accounting for 13% of projects in the period. It was also the most popular investment destination, receiving 16% of all African communication projects.

In the first quarter of 2013, there were 23 inward communications projects in Africa, a 36% decrease compared to the same period in 2012. Using this as a benchmark, it can be expected that African inward FDI in the communications sector will be lower in 2013 than it was in 2012.
