Power was restored to mainland Tanzania after a major power failure, but did not return to Zanzibar, closing businesses and raising the threat of disease from disrupted water supply pumped into homes and businesses using electricity.

Major power outages in South Africa started in December 2007 and are expected to continue until 2013, when vital improvements to the energy infrastructure are due to reach completion.

South Africa’s state-owned electricity company Eskom also stopped supplying power to neighbouring countries including Zimbabwe and Mozambique because of the domestic shortages.
