Data from greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets shows that the US state of Indiana has seen a significant increase in the number of automotive-related FDI projects in the past few years. Although Michigan is still the most popular US state historically in terms of the number of automotive-related projects – with 156 recorded between January 2003 and December 2011 – Indiana recorded the largest number of automotive projects of all US states in 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2009, Indiana recorded 13 more projects that Michigan, in 2010 it recorded 12 more and in 2011 eight more.

Japan-based automotive giant Toyota Motor initiated four projects in Indiana in 2010 alone, further demonstrating the state’s popularity with the world’s largest automotive companies. The south-east state of Tennessee has also witnessed a recent sharp increase in automotive projects in recent years, recording 16 projects in 2010 and 13 in 2011, compared to just four in 2009.
