The Kenyan government has commissioned the construction of a $10bn business and technology hub, Technology City, to boost the country's status as sub-Saharan Africa’s business and information and communications technology hub. The government gave the project's developers the go-ahead in late January 2013, launching the first phase of development, which will be the construction of the Konza Technopolis Park at an estimated cost of $2.4bn. Construction will take place in four phases over a period of 20 years.

When it is completed, Technology City, or the Kenya Silicon Savanna as it has been nicknamed, will be the first hub of its kind in east Africa and will include a business process outsourcing park, a financial and residential district, and a convention centre. It is located in Machakos, 64 kilometres outside of Kenyan capital Nairobi.

“The realisation of the Technology City will put Kenya on the world’s technology map,” the Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki told local reporters. “We are calling on local investors to take up… investments in this project. The potential of its success is enormous.”
