The former communist countries of central, eastern and south-eastern Europe experienced strong growth in the first quarter of 2011 in the alternative and renewable energy sector. Altogether 28 projects have been recorded for the first quarter of 2011, compared with just six for the same period last year. 

March 2011 saw 15 projects, while March 2010 had no projects at all. This figure represents an increase of 400% from the February 2011 figure of three. Romania had the had the highest number of projects for the first quarter of 2011 with seven.
