California is the leading US destination state for software and IT companies looking to set up shop in the US, according to Greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets. The west coast state has witnessed a total of 322 FDI projects since 2003, placing it well clear of its closest competitors New York, Texas and Massachusetts, which had 191, 146 and 109 projects, respectively.

The year 2010 saw the most software and IT projects located in the US with a total of 413 projects. Of these, 72 were located in California, while New York, Texas and Boston witnessed 42, 41 and 24 projects, respectively. fDi Markets shows that a total of 1771 software and IT projects have been located in the US between 2003 and June 2011

However, when it comes to the leading US destination cities for software and IT companies, fDi Markets shows that New York is clearly the leading city with 173 projects, far outranking San Francisco, Chicago and Boston, which had 94, 92 and 65 projects, respectively. 

New projects in 2011 include India-based Aujas, a global provider of information risk management services, which has opened a new office in California, and Ireland-based Wiccle, best known for its website-building product Wiccle Web Builder, which has announced it will open an office San Jose, California.

In 2010, Germany-based online game developer Bigpoint announced the opening of its US headquarters in San Francisco, California.
