Data from greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets shows a steady decline of alternative and renewable energy sector projects into North America between January 2011 to December 2013. A total of 5664 jobs have been recorded in the period, representing total capital investment of $21.18bn.

Looking at the period between January 2011 and December 2013, alternative/renewable FDI reached a peak in 2011, when 52 projects were recorded, creating 2892 jobs. Comparing this with 2013, there was a 55% decrease in project numbers and a 65% decrease in job creation. During this period, there were 63 investing companies and 101 projects.

Out these projects, 93 were new, five were expansions and three were co-locations. The top sub-sectors were wind electric power with 40 projects, solar electric power with 30 and biomass power with 27. Data demonstrates the companies responsible for the greatest number of FDI projects included Electricite de France, Iberdrola, British Petroleum, SunEdison Inc and OCI Company. The highest number of projects were into the states of Ontario, Texas and California.
