Ford will invest Rp67.5bn ($4.5bn) with partners in Indonesia to advance sustainable nickel production, as the US automaker uses partnerships to directly source raw materials for its electric vehicle (EV) production.

The announcement on March 30 is part of an agreement reached last year with nickel miner Vale Indonesia and China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt. The Pomala Block HPAL Project, located in the southwest of Sulawesi, will produce up to 120 kilotons of contained nickel per year, in the form of mixed hydroxide precipitate. It is expected to start commercial operations in 2026.
