An interactive know-how

Healthcare research in France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region dates back to the 13th century, with the founding of the Faculty of Medicine in Montpellier, the region’s capital city.

Fast forward nearly 800 years and Languedoc-Roussillon is today France’s number three region for research and development (R&D) with a unique know-how of world-renowned universities (there are four), nine public research bodies, more than 200 laboratories, more than 11,000 researchers, and multinational and start-up businesses in biosciences and healthcare, which frequently work together on collaborative research projects.

Some of the world’s leading research into AIDS, cancer, diabetes and infectious diseases is carried out in Languedoc-Roussillon.

World-class business and R&D

The Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon Genopole is the undisputed proof that the Languedoc-Roussillon is also one of Europe’s major biotech, drugs and healthcare platforms, featuring corporations such as Sanofi Aventis (R&D centre and a pharmaceutical production facility, employing nearly 2000 people), Bausch & Lomb (ophthalmologic products), PCAS (fine chemistry), Horiba-ABX, Biopep, Idenix Pharmaceuticals (part of Novartis) and Biorad.

The region also has specialist structures in neuropsychiatry, infectiology, oncology, emerging pathologies and orphan diseases, regenerative medicine, biodiagnostics and biomolecules gathered within the French competitiveness cluster Orphème.
