Figures show that since 1997, London has attracted 34 Chinese FDI projects, with 27 of these projects having been completed since 2002. London has attracted 15% of all Chinese FDI into Europe since 2002, the highest share for any European city.
Trade between the UK and China has more than doubled over the past five years and the importance of the UK to China’s economy was reiterated during the Chinese premier’s recent visit to London. Wen Jiabao hailed the trade and economic ties between China and the UK and expressed confidence in the further development of bilateral relations.
In 2004 alone, investment into London from greater China totalled £120 million. The UK is already by far the largest recipient of Chinese FDI in Europe, and one-third of that comes to London. London’s Chinese business community now includes more than 250 mainland companies, most of which have chosen London for their European sales and marketing headquarters.
