The annual Personality of the Year awards recognise the political and business leaders around the world who have been the most proactive, dynamic and innovative in securing foreign investment and improving the business environments of their jurisdictions.

Mr Hain, who serves as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and Wales, caught the magazine's eye with his recent efforts to bring Indian company ICICI OneSource to Northern Ireland, creating 1000 jobs. In its August/September 2006 issue announcing the award winners, fDi noted his active involvement in securing investment projects and his knack for helping close FDI deals.

Receiving the award, Mr Hain commented: "In Northern Ireland we have a cluster of excellence that is fast becoming a prime investment centre. What companies investing there know is that, in addition to the sound commercial reasons, they are also making a contribution to healing ancient divisions in Northern Ireland."

In being named a Personality of the Year for 2006, Mr Hain joins the ranks of such previous honourees as Mexican President Vicente Fox, Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva and Mayor of Seoul Lee Myung-bak.

The 2006 regional winners included: Patrick Ramiaramanana, Mayor of Antananarivo, Madagascar (Africa); Dato Seri Rafidah Aziz, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia (Asia); Leo Starkman, Minister of Investment, Honduras (Latin America); Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar, United Arab Emirates (Middle East); and Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario (North America and Global Winner).
