In the past decade, Taiwan has transformed itself into a high-value, technology-driven economy. Technology-intensive industries now make up more than 50% of the country’s manufacturing output.Among the specialist areas under discussion are computer chip design, IT services and biotechnology. Many Taiwanese scientists and biotech specialists are returning from overseas to set up new IT, biotech and pharmaceutical ventures, supported by growing investment from the government and venture capitalists.Taiwan is already the world’s second largest supplier of integrated circuit designs, second only to the US.
