This is among the conclusions of the UK Department of Trade & Industry’s R&D Scoreboard 2005, which contains extensive data on the top Global 1000 R&D companies and the top 750 from the UK.

According to the report, most R&D activity is concentrated in the largest countries, sectors and companies. The three largest R&D sectors globally are automotives, IT hardware and pharmaceuticals; fastest growth in R&D is occurring in pharma, automotives and aerospace.

Sector mix is shown to be the key determinant of a country’s average R&D intensity, the patent/R&D ratio and the dividend/R&D ratio, the DTI said.
