The US remains the top destination for auto component projects, with 195 between January 2002 and October 2004 out of a total of 1075 projects in OCO Consulting’s global sample. China has the second largest share, with 168 projects in the same period as a result of rapidly increasing car ownership. In Europe, projects are concentrated on former eastern bloc countries: 82 in the Czech Republic, 67 in Hungary, 44 in Poland and 31 in Romania. General Motors has been the largest investor, putting $2.55bn into the sector during the 34-month period, followed by German auto technology group Robert Bosch ($1.67bn) and Japanese auto parts maker Denso ($1.32bn). Japanese car maker Toyota’s expansion has included 30 projects, creating 2542 jobs.
