Canada has been experiencing a downturn in inward FDI, according to data from greenfield investment monitor fDi Markets. After peaking in September 2012, when 35 projects were recorded, inbound FDI has slumped, with the most recently published data showing that 12 projects were recorded in March 2013.

Figures from March show the lowest project numbers, capital expenditure and number of jobs created in Canada in the 12 months between April 2012 and March 2013. A total of $188m was invested in the country through 12 projects with a total of 639 jobs created.

Inbound FDI from the US, the largest source of FDI for Canada, decreased significantly between September 2012 and March 2013. In September, 18 projects were recorded in Canada from the US. This figure halved to nine in March. The second biggest source destination, the UK, recorded no projects in the country in March.
